Port Angeles & Victoria BC

I was a little worried that I would miss the ferry when I arrived in Port Angeles.

The parking lots had envelopes to put your money in, no electronic machines to take credit cards. Which meant I needed exact change for parking my car for two days. I only had a $20 bill and two $1 bills. And I needed $12. There was no way I was paying extra. So I ran to the closest store to get some change, ran back to the parking lot and then had 10 minutes to get to the ferry.

I got there out of breath, but in plenty of time. Bought my roundtrip ticket and walked to the waiting area.

The ferry was huge. Having no previous experience with a ferry before, I just spent my time exploring on the way to Victoria. I took tons of pictures on the ferry and watched as we sailed away. Then I felt sick. So I took a nap. And then we were there.

Victoria was a very quaint harbor town. I got the chance to walk around and explore the harbor and the downtown areas.

I exchanged some money and if you know me at all, that was exciting! I'm a coin collector at heart, but I figured that being a currency collector would be even more fun. The exchange rate was kind of horrible...but at least I didn't end up with less money.

It had been about 5 years since I last saw the family I was visiting. Kita was a great tour guide of the city and the University of Victoria. We even saw the bunny infestation on the campus. They looked like an explosion of pet-store bunnies. And then were not afraid of us and actually when I bent down to take photos of them, they came up to me like a pet would!

Kieran didn't remember me, since he was about 5 when I last saw him, but he is a very smart kid. Kamilia was a baby when I last saw her and she had grown so much! And then Roderick was there too! So it was nice to hang out with the family and I can't wait to see them all again.

The trip back to Port Angeles was much colder than the first ferry ride I took the day before. So I didn't stay outside for much of the trip. But I took a few pictures with travel buddy and that of course started a great conversation with a fellow traveler.

By the time I got back to my car, I was very happy to have only taken my backpack on the trip. But I also had a dead phone. So I charged it and then listened to the 3 or 4 voicemails I had. All of them were from 'worried' family members. Which frustrated me, because I then had to call and calm them, let them all know I was fine. Even though it was only a 2-hour ferry ride since the last time I spoke with any of them. I couldn't talk on my phone in Canada or use the internet on it because there were outrageous charges.

After settling everything with all the 'worried' family, I had spent more time sitting in the parking lot than I had planned. So I had to just get a hotel in Port Angeles for the night. Another set back.
